On the radar: Onimusha: Way of the Sword
GameOnimusha: Way of the SwordView in catalog
This month Onimusha: Way of the Sword is on our radar: it lands September 4, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (€79.99 standard on PlayStation Store). It is not confirmed for Game Pass or PS Plus catalog day one, and Capcom moved the date up from the original late-September window.
What’s it about?
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom’s big return to a series that had gone nearly two decades without a mainline entry. The lead is Miyamoto Musashi, an impulsive samurai who reaches Kyoto in the Edo period and ends up bound to the Oni gauntlet, an artifact that grants superhuman strength to hunt Genma (underworld creatures). The setup blends dark fantasy, sword duels, and exploration through a capital corrupted by miasma.
Combat follows the series’ sword-action lane: counters, absorbing enemy souls as a resource, and fights against rivals on Musashi’s level (the expanded demo already shows the duel with Sasaki Ganryū). It is not open world like Ghost of Tsushima: linear stages, intense fights, and bosses. Capcom modeled the hero’s face on Toshiro Mifune, which fits the classic samurai-film tone.
Here’s how it looks in official shots; the overview trailer is at the bottom if you want motion:
Date, platforms, and Europe pricing
Capcom’s official date: Friday, September 4, 2026. On PlayStation Store Spain the listing may show a digital unlock in the early hours of the 4th depending on your time zone. Also on Xbox Store, Nintendo eShop (Switch 2), Steam, and Epic Games Store.
Official Spain digital storefront list prices (console standard; confirm SKUs on purchase day):
| Edition | Guide price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (digital or physical) | €79.99 | Game only |
| Deluxe (digital) | €89.99 | Deluxe Kit with extra content |
| Premium Deluxe (digital) | €99.99 | Premium Deluxe Kit |
Pre-order or early digital purchase includes a set with the Komainu charm and Sealed Curse sword skin (cosmetic and gear upgrades; unlock as you progress). Capcom renamed the pre-order bonus to an Early Adopter Bonus after moving the date; check the PlayStation listing for the exact window.
A free demo is on PS5, Xbox, and PC (Steam/Epic). Keep your demo save and you get a bonus in the full game (Kubi Akari charm). On Switch 2 the demo was not available as of August; check the eShop before launch.
Game Pass and PS Plus Extra have not announced day-one inclusion. If you already pay for a subscription, check the current listing before paying full price. More context in Game Pass explained and PlayStation Plus explained.
Bottom line (and a quick take)
I’d been hoping Capcom would bet big on Onimusha again instead of only remasters, and the gamescom expanded demo left a good taste: demanding combat, uneasy atmosphere, and a Musashi with personality. Don’t expect a huge RPG; this is samurai action at classic-series pace, closer to PS2-era Onimusha than a modern open world.
What holds me back a little is the €79.99 console base price (standard AAA, but steep if you only want a ten-hour adventure). In return, it’s truly multiplatform from day one and revives an IP many people missed.
- If you liked the original Onimusha games or sword action in the Sekiro / Nioh lane: it’s the release of the week and the demo is free.
- If you wanted open world or co-op: this is linear story and one-on-one combat; the overview trailer is mandatory viewing.
- If you only play via subscription: no day-one Game Pass or PS Plus today; buy or wait (no date announced).
- The date is also on our release calendar.
